Too Haute for You
Dress by BCBG, Caged Heels by TAMARA MELLON
Velvet is a trend that took a second for me to get on board with. I think mainly because it reminds me of two things. One, a couch, and two, a pimps costume for Halloween. Two visions that until now, I did not want in my home, or in my closet. I think that is what happens when you grow up in certain era's. There are just some things that you can not relive. That was definitely the case until I met this dress. A fashion perk to wearing velvet, is that it has absolutely no stretch! It holds you up and in like you wouldn't believe. Upside, your body looks pretty damn good. Downside, you can't sit, so pick one. What is more important? Sitting, or looking like a sexy AF!
This year, we've seen boots in the fancy fabrics, we've seen celebrities like Kendell Jenner embrace the style and we've seen spring 2017 runways covered in crushed-up textiles in warmer weather.
Seeing the texture in different cuts (not the structured blazers or Mary-Janes you typically consider) is one thing; but seeing it in such bold shades, and not the usual black, eggplant, or cranberry, wasn't just surprising, it was shocking. It took me a few beats to get on the velvet train as it is, so hopping into crushed velvet in colors like pastel pink or baby blue, is going to take a bit more water if I am intended to swallow that huge velvet pill!
There are some weather considerations to keep in mind if you're going to wear velvet in warmer months, especially if you are 40+ like me. Hopefully those night sweats don't find there way to my velvet dress! If so, well, wear it anyway and pray for strong air conditioning.
